BIOFACT 2018 Into Organic

BIOFACH is the world’s largest organic trade fair, organized annually in Nuremberg, Germany. It is a unique fair that focuses on organic products only. This year, the four days 14 th – 17 th February,
witnessed the fair hosting 28,000 exhibitors from 80 countries and 50,000 visitors from 135 countries. As in previous fairs, the Africa Pavilion offered space for all African countries.

The Tanzania Organic Agriculture Movement (TOAM), led by the CEO, Mr. Gama Jordan, organized a policy visit to the Biofach by exposing Ms. Amina Salum Ali, Minister of Trade, Industry Marketing of Zanzibar (MTIM) and the Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Ministry, Mr. Juma
Ali Juma. The two visited Biofach for the first time and had opportunity to meet traders who buy spices from Zanzibar. After the visit, the Minister admits that, There are a lot of possibilities for up
scaling spice farming and make Zanzibar reliable contributor the industry and export trade. I am sure, if we do so, Zanzibar will win and compete in the global cosmetic industry.

Mr. Gama, the TOAM CEO, said they organized the trip to follow up the Zanzibar Policy Forum that TOAM organized in October 2017 in support of the Zanzibar’s motive of turning it into an organic Island and an evergreen zone.

TOAM was able to bring the two policy makers to BIOFACH through the support of Farmer Family Learning Group (FFLG) and the Ecological Organic Agriculture – Initiative (EOA-I) projects.
