The African Organic Conference

Since its inception in 2009, in Kampala,Uganda, the AOC has been an instrumental platform for bringing together EOA stakeholders and actors to share experiences, knowledge and shape common voice for promoting the sector. The second AOC was held in Lusaka, Zambia from 2 nd – 4 th May in 2012, whereas the third one was held in Lagos, Nigeria, from 5 th – 8 th October 2015.

The African Organic Network (AfrONet), under the auspices of the African Union (AU) led Coalition of Ecological Organic Agriculture Initiative (EOA-I) in Africa and the IFOAM – Organics
International, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation,Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and other partners, in every three years, organize an African Organic Conference (AOC).

The next AON will be the forth-in sequence and will be hosted by the National Consultation of
Farmers’ Organizations of Cameroon (CNOP-CAM), in Yaoundé, Cameroon, from 5th to 8th
November 2018.

The Conference is an initiative of AfrONet and is convened every three years as a multi-stakeholders’ platform for the following, among others:

- African organic farmers solving their challenges through sharing of knowledge and experience;

- Presentation of scientific evidence on capability of organic agriculture in contribution to
transformation of national and continental economy, systems resilience, mitigation of
climate change, among others;

- Exchange of information by regional (Regional Economic Communities) and national policy
makers on the implementation of the resolution of the African Heads of States and Government
to support organic farming in Africa;

- Exhibition of organic produce and products (Afro Organic Fair) to stimulate regional and
international trade.

- Media organizations coverage and sharing of their views on how organic agriculture could
effectively contribute to continental and national development.

- The conference targets farmers, consumers,researchers, trainers, academicians, extension
practitioners, policy makers, donors, media organizations, private sector actors and financiers in the agriculture value chains, promoters of organic agriculture, students and groups of young people interested in organic and ecological agriculture.

It is organized in the context of mainstreaming organic agriculture based on the resolution of
the African Heads of State and Government to support organic farming in Africa. It is
estimated that more than 350 delegates from at least 35 countries will attend.
